Religious leaders asked to help fight corruption

HOIMA– Religious leaders in Bunyoro Sub-region have been challenged to join the campaign against corruption as one way of promoting efficient service delivery.

The call was sounded by Hoima City woman Member of Parliament, Asinansi Nyakato during the ordination of 11 priests and eight deacons by Bishop of Hoima Catholic diocese, Vincent Kirabo Amooti.

Speaking during the colourful ceremony and mass held at Our Lady of Lourdes, Bujumbura Parish in Hoima City on Saturday, Nyakato said there is need for religious leaders to join the fight against the evil of corruption in their teachings without fear or favour.

She noted that the increasing cases of corruption among the local government officials in the region is alarming, adding that ending it requires a concerted effort from the different stakeholders in the country.

The MP’s comments come at the time when officials of the district service commissions and leaders in the districts of Kikuube, Hoima and Kagadi are being accused of extortion and nepotism in the recruitment of workers.

She noted corruption is dwindling service delivery and that this continues to affect the common man who is the consumer of the services provided by the government.

Bishop Kirabo Amooti who was the main celebrant cautioned the priests and deacons to remain faithful to their vows, dedicate themselves, and prioritise serving God other than their self-interests.

He challenged clerics in the diocese to double their efforts as they spread the gospel far and wide to see that the people give their lives to Jesus Christ so that they are saved from their sins.

Mary Grace Mugasa, the State Minister for Public Service appreciated the parents of the ordained clerics, saying they took a profound decision to offer their children to serve God.

She noted that serving God is the most precious thing in this world, even though she added that many people are taken by the earthly things which the Bible warns about.

Rev. Father Andrew Kaahwa Mula, who spoke on behalf of the fellow ordained priests and deacons appreciated the different people who supported and guided them during their stay at the Seminary. He called on Christians to pray for them as they serve the Church of Christ.

MP Nyakato urged the newly ordained priests, deacons, and other religious leaders to stick to their vows of serving God but work with other leaders to transform the communities.

Among the ordained Priests include Reverend Fathers; Paul Amanyire, Andrew Kaahwa Mula, John Bosco Kasangaki, Antonio Kisembo, Richard Tumusiime, Solomon Kwikiriza, Francis Asiimwe, Charles Matovu, Patrick Mugisa, and Richard Tumusiime.

Ordained deacons, who now also become religious leaders are Deagratius Alinaitwe, Valerious Ayebale, Rogers Kabuleeta, Elias Kasaija, Joseph Natigo, Gerald Tumukugize, and John Ssewanyana.
