Canadian credit unions are number one choice for small businesses, global conference hears

VANCOUVER – Credit unions’ cooperative principles and values-based services are what has set Canadian credit unions apart from other financial institutions, the leader of the Canadian Credit Union Association [CCUA] recently told attendees at a global gathering of 3,000 credit union representatives and partners in Vancouver, Canada.

“Canada’s credit unions have a long history since their inception of adapting to meet the changing needs of their members and the diverse markets they serve,” CCUA President and CEO Jeff Guthrie stated during his speech at the kickoff of the 2023 World Credit Union Conference.

He said a continued commitment to putting members and their needs first is what will support Canadians, especially small business owners, as they navigate turbulent economic times.

CCUA is the national trade association for credit unions in Canada. It plays a central role in promoting advocacy, education, and credit union research in an effort to champion Canada’s credit unions as they help Canadians achieve financial well-being.

A record 3,000 attendees from 60 countries, including those from Africa and the rest of the world, are attending the 2023 World Credit Union Conference running from July 23-26, 2023.

World Council of Credit Unions [WOCCU] Board Chair, Diana Dykstra encouraged credit union professionals to embrace change and remain open to new possibilities at the conference co-hosted by WOCCU and CCUA.

“It is in the spirit of adapting and becoming resilient that we gather this week to connect and learn from one another,” said Dykstra. “You will meet colleagues and friends from every corner of the globe and learn how our peers are addressing credit union issues like expanding membership, developing shared solutions, delivering better services through digital platforms, and climate-smart, resilient solutions.”
