Preparations for Mbarara City Festival underway

MBARARA – Mbarara City leadership, Mbarara City Traders Association, Abahumuza Development Group, and One Time Marketing Group plan to hold Mbarara City Festival from February 10-12, 2023.

Mbarara became a city on July 1, 2020, and since then, many developments such as real estate, five-star hotels, and factories among other businesses have emerged and authorities say it is important to celebrate such successes.

During the launch of the festival plans on Friday, Ramathan Kimbugwe, Vice chairman Abahumuza Development Group explained that the festival had been planned for December 4, 2022, but was disrupted by an outbreak of Ebola in the country.

“We had planned to celebrate it [Mbarara City Festival] last year but because of Ebola, we were forced to suspend the celebrations,” Kimbugwe said.

According to the organisers, a symposium will be held on February 10, 2023, at Igongo Cultural Centre while the climax of the festival activities will take place on February 12, 2023 at Kakyeka Stadium.

The festival will include activities like, motor rally, music, dance, and drama as well as exhibitions. It is sponsored by Century Bottling Company Limited, Cash Hardware, AbaBet, Prudential Uganda, and Rooftop among others.

“We have invited a panel of business experts from Uganda Revenue Authority [URA], Uganda Registration Services Bureau [URSB], hotel industry, and tourism for a business symposium where they will share experiences and insights with the business people in Mbarara City,” Kimbugwe said.

Kimbugwe said the symposium would also help the traders to learn about business registration and business policies that affect special interest groups like women, youth, and persons with disabilities.

The deputy city town clerk, Richard Mugisha said the festival would become an annual event to celebrate Mbarara City’s milestones.

“The city festival is one of the ways to show that Mbarara City is for us all to enjoy and do business peacefully without any encumbrances,” he said.

“This is just the beginning of the journey but we want Mbarara to be a green, inclusive, and sustainable city that should make everybody feel comfortable,” Mugisha said.

Mayor Robert Mugabe Kakyebezi said that the sequence of events happening in Mbarara City this year, including Tarehe Sita celebrations on February 6, 2023, manifests it is growing.

He added: “It is right for us to celebrate and market our city [Mbarara City] so that people worldwide know that there is a city in Uganda growing at a high speed.”

The resident city commissioner [RCC] Mbarara, Lt Col. James Mwesigye challenged the city leadership to fight corruption if they want they want it to become the fastest growing regional city in Uganda.

For Mbarara to develop, he added, it must have good roads, a physical plan for its structures to look good,” Mwesigye said.

He also encouraged Mbarara city leadership to continue marketing it to attract more investors. “Even if you do many good things but if they are not publicised, people cannot know them,” he said.

The Speaker of Parliament Anita Among is expected to grace the festival celebrations.
