Police officers urged to keep healthy

MBARARA– The Second Division Commander Makenke barracks, Brig Gen. Francis Takirwa has advised police officers to keep their bodies healthy if they are to achieve much in life.

Brig Gen. Takirwa said on Wednesday while decorating 26 police officers from the Rwizi region in Mbarara who got promoted to other different ranks in the Uganda police force.

The president promoted 773 gazetted police officers on August 4, 2022, as per the powers vested in the president in section 1 of the Police Act Chapter 303, out of which 26 officers were from the Rwizi region.

Among the promoted were 5 police officers to the rank of AIGP, then 9 to the rank of SCP from CP, 33 promoted from the rank of ACP to CP, 69 officers from the rank of SSP to ACP, 137 from SP to SSP while 158 from the rank of ASP to SP and 172 officers were promoted from the rank of IP to ASP in Uganda.

“I congratulate all those whose names have been read because promotion is a process which involves assessment of performance, a reason as to why some of you get promoted while others fail to make it. It is not accidental but there are some calculations they normally go through to solve this problem,” Takirwa said.

He said it is courage, patience, determination, and commitment, which enabled the promoted police officers to achieve the great milestone.

“When you look at the kind of provocation you go through, especially the politically motivated incidents, I think there is a lot of patience and discipline. Otherwise, we would be having burial after burial in the societies. So think about discipline, patience and once you embrace the two you find yourself committed to safety and security for people and their properties.”

Despite the discipline, patience, and commitment, Brig Takirwa warned police officers to keep their bodies healthy to be able to earn more promotions in the police force.

“You can only score more promotions if you are still healthy, don’t allow yourself to go sick because you may miss out when better things are coming through the closed door because you are sick and find it difficult to enjoy whatever will be prepared for you,” he said.

Brig Takirwa added that Uganda has a darling security force that enables peace in the greater region that other countries must appreciate.

Rwizi regional police commander, Emitu Ezekiel Ebapu, who is among the decorated officers promoted from the rank of SSP to ACP, encouraged the junior officers also to exhibit good leadership and discipline to also achieve such promotions in the future.

“This gives me great pleasure as Rwizi regional headquarters when decorating our gallant officers who have been promoted in the region and this is one of the major ceremonies that depict forty years of hard work, constant learning, improvement, and commitment, I am sure for everyone sited here this moment didn’t come easily,” Ebapu said.

“The UPF is arranging for yet another round of promotions and I am encouraging the under-serving officers to benefit from the particular range list being prepared,” he said.

SP Michael Kananura, the regional community liaison officer in the Rwizi region dedicated the promotional ranks achieved to God.

“I thank God almighty who has enabled us to reach such an important day and above all for the promotions we have received. The exhortation neither comes from the east nor from the west but from the Lord. And for this has not been by our power nor by our might but by the power of God,” said Kananura.

Robert Kanusu, the Resident City Commissioner Mbarara City North Division encouraged the senior promoted officers to provide an enabling environment that inspires the junior officers to also get promotions in the future.

“Those who have been promoted today, how can you use your promotion to train and guide those who are under you and inspire them to work diligently and even perform better than you? It’s an inspiration to you to work hard to inspire others and stimulate those inner senses in you to do the best that will be seen and recognised by everyone”

He also encouraged police to use modern technology to combat crime.
