Omoro district council approves 2022/23 budget

OMORO– Omoro district council has approved a budget of Shs 29.3 billion for the financial year 2022/23, with the education and sports sector taking a lion’s share. The budget was approved on Monday during the full council meeting.

According to the budget estimates, education and sports take the lion’s share of the budget with funds allocated totaling Shs 12.3bln followed by health with Shs 6.2bln and administration taking Shs 5.3bln.

Other sector allocations include; production and marketing with Shs 2.2bln, Council business Shs 744.7mln, community-based services Shs 315.9mln, finance Shs 290mln, works and technical services Shs 695.9mln, water sector Shs 613mln, trade, industry and local economic development Shs 70mln, natural resources Shs 185mln, and audit Shs 62mln.

Douglas Okello Peter, the Omoro district LCV Chairperson told this reporter in an interview that education and health were allocated bigger amounts of money in the budget because they are the core pillars of community development.

He said they allocated more money to production, trade, and local economic development to improve the value chain, and access to markets, which he said should translate into improved livelihoods.

Peter Okot, the Tochi County Member of Parliament who graced the full council meeting on Monday said there`s need for more funding in the agricultural sector since it is the backbone of the Ugandan economy and Omoro district as well.

Okot said that most times, the government has been allocating meager funds to the agricultural sector. He noted that the district councils can change this by beginning to allocate more funds to the sector.

Parliament days ago passed Shs 48.1 Trillion national budget for the 2022/23 financial year, with emphasis on the Parish Development Model [PDM], enhancement of salaries for scientists, Human capital development, governance, and security.

The theme for the next budget is ‘Full Monetization of the UgandanEconomy Through Commercial Agriculture, Industrialization, Expanding and Broadening services and Digital Transformation and Market Access’.
