Gulu City residents to have regular water supply

GULU-National Water and Sewerage Corporation [NWSC] Gulu area is now able to pump water three times a day from Oyitino Dam 2 following the completion of restoration works at the facility.

Ivan Tekakwo, the NWSC Gulu regional public relations officer said that the silt at the reservoir had accumulated for a long period, reducing the water retention capacity at the dam.

The silt is partly blamed on farming and fishing activities around and in the dam by neighbouring communities.

“The silt under has been accumulating for a while but after desilting the dam, the water retention capacity has increased. We expect water retention to increase during the rainy season,” Tekakwo said.

He added that the corporation is now able to pump water three times a day during this dry season from Oyitino Dam 2 instead of just once.

The restoration works that cost Shs 31 million were carried out in February by Green Home Transformations, a social enterprise in Gulu City.

The funding was secured from GIZ, a German development Agency through International Union for Conservation of Nature [IUCN].

Bosco Endriko, the founder of Green Home Transformations told this reporter that they desilted, backfilled the gulley, opened a fourth channel and pitched stones on part of the bridge to protect the dam from gathering excess soil which then makes the flow of water difficult.

“We tried to protect the dam so that soil does not wash up into the dam and cause silting,” Endriko said.

Endriko added that, “We have also planted bamboo trees and elephant grass to hold the soil. We are aiming at increasing the quality and quantity of water at Oyitino Dam 2.”

Daily water demand in Gulu City is over 10 million litres, according to NWSC which supplies over 11,000 customers in Gulu area.

Water supply however drops to 5 million litres during prolonged dry spells sometimes leading to rationing.
