Uganda’s coffee exports surge 27.93 percent in February 2025 amid global price hike

Italy remained the top destination for Uganda's coffee, importing 45.17 percent of the total volume, followed by Germany, India, and Belgium

KAMPALA, April 13, 2025 — Uganda’s coffee exports reached a record high in February 2025, with 555,756 60-kilo bags, earning the country the much-needed foreign exchange of US$ 167.78 million [about Shs 621 billion].

According to the latest report from the Agriculture Ministry, the latest figures marked a significant increase of 27.93 percent in quantity of the coffee exported and 103.25 percent in value compared to February 2024.

‘‘The average export price rose to US$ 5.03 per kilo, up from US$ 3.17 per kilo in the same month last year, driven by high global coffee prices due to dry conditions in Brazil and Vietnam,’’ the report says

The report says Robusta coffee dominated exports, accounting for 84 percent of the total volume, while Arabica exports saw a notable increase of 43.60 percent in quantity and 132.04 percent in value compared to February 2024, with Bugisu C/PB Arabica fetched the highest price at US$ 8.18 per kilo.

Italy remained the top destination for Uganda’s coffee, importing 45.17 percent of the total volume, followed by Germany, India, and Belgium.  ‘Europe accounted for 74 percent of Uganda’s coffee exports, reflecting strong demand in the region,’’ says the report.

Despite challenges such as severe dry conditions and pest outbreaks affecting coffee production, Uganda’s coffee sector continues to thrive, with exports for the coffee year [March 2024-February 2025] totaling 6.57 million bags worth US$ 1.72 billion, a 70.71 percent increase in value compared to the previous year.

“Coffee exports for twelve months [March 2024-February 2025] totaled 6.57 million bags worth US$ 1.72 billion compared to 6.14 million bags worth US$ 999.84 million in the previous year [March 2023-Febryary 2024],” says the report.

Globally world coffee production for 2024/25 is forecast to reach 6.9 million bags higher than the previous year to 174.9 million due primarily to rebounding output in Vietnam and Indonesia. World exports are forecast to be slightly higher as gains in Vietnam and Indonesia more than offset reduced shipments from Brazil.

Global consumption is expected to increase by 5.1 million bags to 168.1 million, with the largest gains in the European Union, the United States, and China. Ending stocks are expected to drop by 1.5 million bags to 20.9 million, according to the United States Department of Agriculture, Coffee: World Markets and Trade report, December 2024.
