Shs 1.2bln water supply project kicks off in Alebtong
ALEBTONG– Government has started the construction of a Shs 1.2 billion pipe water supply system in Alanyi parish, Abako Sub-county, Alebtong district in a bid to increase water coverage in the district.
Cut and Civil Auto Works Limited is to undertake the construction works for three years.
The project will supply water in four areas; Alanyi trading centre, St. Theresa Girls Secondary School, Alanyi Primary School, and Alanyi Health Centre, according to the Alebtong district chief administrative officer, Simon Ebibona.
“It will increase the water coverage in Alebtong. “This is a solar-driven water supply system and the cost of maintenance will not be as much as the one for boreholes,” Ebibona said.
The district has 1,153 domestic water points serving 261,234 people, but 331 water points have been non-functional for over five years and are considered abandoned.
Without revealing the coverage, Ebibona lauded the Ministry of Local Government for considering the district which has been water stressed.
The district LC5 chairperson, David Kennedy Odongo also commended government for the project, saying it is being constructed at the right when a number of water points have dried up due to the prolonged drought.
Islamic Development Bank is financing the project whose construction kicked off last week.
