Lango Zonal Industrial Hub admits 240 for skills training
LIRA -A total of 240 youth have been admitted to Lango Zonal Industrial Hub at Lira University to undergo a five-month skills development training meant to help youth create their own jobs.
The youth aged 18-32 are to undergo training in tailoring and cutting garments, carpentry, hairdressing, welding, bakery, and building and construction.
Bakery and building construction are new courses introduced in this second lot following overwhelming demands from the community and leaders.
This is the second lot after 210 were passed out following a six-month training on January 3, 2023, by the State House Comptroller Jane Barekye. They were awarded a Level One certificate by the Directorate of Industrial Training [DIT] under the Ministry of Education.
In 2020, President Yoweri Museveni implored government to allocate Shs 130 billion for the construction of 21 zonal industrial hubs across the country to enhance youth skilling and training.
Government intends to graduate 12,600 youth every year from the zonal industrial hubs under Presidential Initiative on Skilling. According to government, such training will help spur industrialisation.
The hubs target unprivileged youth, who have not had a chance to further their studies due to various challenges. The training will help the youth to be useful s they use the acquired skills to engage in production.
Vicky Abura, the assistant manager at Lango Zonal Industrial said they introduced two new courses and reduced the period of training from six to five months.
“They have reported and we feel after five months we shall pass them out and another lot is enrolled,” Abura said.
