Namisindwa authorities fail to repair roof of local school

NAMISINDWA-Government-aided Buwuula Primary School in Lwakakha Town Council, Namisindwa district has not been repaired after hailstorms blew off roofs of classroom blocks about a month ago.

Rogers Wilson Wamoto, the head teacher said they are struggling to get money for the construction works yet the new school term begins early next month.

“Attempts to get financial help from the Ministry of Education and Sports and Namisindwa district local government have yielded nothing,” he said, adding that 250 iron sheets are needed for roofing classroom blocks.

Ben Khabwa, the LCI Chairperson Buwuuma Cell in Lwakhakha Town Council, blames the district education department for neglecting the school.

According to Khabwa, the community asked the head teacher to allow them to contribute funds for the iron sheets instead of waiting for intervention from government.

“We will not wait for something we are not sure will come. Schools are about to open, so we want to mobilise the community to contribute iron sheets for roofing so that our children can study when the new term begins,” Irene Nafuna, a parent of the school said.

Sophie Kuloba, the Namisindwa district education officer said that the school is not safe for the learners and teachers because of the poor state of the structures.

“We are going to have an emergency meeting to see how to handle the situation before schools re-open,” she said.
Constructed in 1984, Buwuula Primary School is among the oldest schools in Bugisu Sub-region. Teachers said before the heavy rains destroyed classroom roofs, all the buildings at the school were already dilapidated.
