MP Acen offers sewing machines to Alebtong youth

ALEBTONG, March 30, 2024 – The Alebtong District Woman Member of Parliament,  Dorcas Acen has donated 70 sewing machines to disadvantaged youth undertaking tailoring courses at Alebtong Skilling, Vocational and Business Centre in Alebtong Town Council.

MP Acen also offered 2,000 kilogrammes of maize seeds to different women groups during the belated International Women’s Day celebrations held at Alanyi Primary School in Abako Sub-county on March 27, 2024.

Acen urged the young girls whose studies were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic to go for vocational skills training to create their own jobs and wealth.

She added that she has established branches in the 14 sub-counties in the district to facilitate access to the vocational training.

“As the District Woman Member of Parliament I have started the journey of empowering our youth especially girls who got pregnant at an early age and could not go back to school,” Acen said.

She said the skills training centres have so far admitted so far 500 youth and are undergoing tailoring, carpentry, mechanics, welding, block-laying and concrete practice, and hairdressing.

Speaking at the belated International Women’s Day celebrations, the Resident District Commissioner, Gilan Akullo Omara called upon women to embrace the government programmes such as Parish Development Model [PDM], Uganda Women Entrepreneurship Programme [UWEP], and Emyooga Programme.

She advised women also to embrace, Generating Growth and Opportunities for Women Entrepreneurs [GROW], a project funded by the World Bank to boost businesses run by women in Uganda.

On his part, the Chief Administrative Officer for Alebtong district, Franco Oloboro underscored the role of women in the society, saying “when you talk of a woman, you also talk of the communities because without them [women], the community doesn’t exist.”
