Credit union-backed candidates secure electoral victories in US midterms

The victories include 29 candidates contesting open seats as credit union advocates prepare to take up positions in the 120th Congress

WASHINGTON, November 4, 2026 – Hundreds of candidates backed by the American credit union movement have secured electoral victories in the 2026 US midterm elections, with results showing 186 wins out of 199 reported priority races as of Wednesday morning.

The victories include 29 candidates contesting open seats as credit union advocates prepare to take up positions in the 120th Congress.

The results follow a record US$10 million investment by America’s Credit Unions Political Action Committee [PAC] in support of candidates considered champions of the credit union movement.

The organisation also coordinated a nationwide grassroots campaign involving America’s Credit Unions, state credit union leagues and volunteers, who mobilised support for selected candidates alongside its regular political advocacy activities.

America’s Credit Unions President and Chief Executive Officer Scott Simpson said the election results demonstrated the strength of the credit union movement and the importance of bipartisan advocacy.

“The 2026 midterm elections underscored the enduring strength of the credit union movement and the value of bipartisan advocacy,” Simpson said.

He congratulated newly elected and returning members of Congress, while commending the organisation’s staff, league partners and credit union professionals for their contribution to the electoral campaigns.

Simpson said the US$10 million investment had supported candidates who champion credit unions, helping ensure that the interests of 146 million American consumers remained a priority.

He added that the organisation would work with the new Congress, irrespective of which political party controls it, to advance policies supporting credit unions and their members.

“Credit unions are essential to promoting consumer choice, lowering household costs, and expanding access to affordable credit on Main Street,” he said.

The organisation said its priorities include protecting the cooperative business model and the not-for-profit tax status of credit unions, modernising outdated regulations and safeguarding local communities.

Among the priority candidates declared winners as of Wednesday morning were Representative Chris Pappas, a Democrat who won New Hampshire’s open Senate seat; Representative Vicente Gonzalez, also a Democrat, who was re-elected to represent Texas’s 34th Congressional District; and Luke Bronin, a Democrat elected to represent Connecticut’s 1st Congressional District.

The election victories are expected to strengthen the credit union movement’s representation and advocacy efforts in the incoming Congress.
