Local leaders urge gov’t to upgrade Lwakhakha border post

NAMISINDWA, April 24, 2024 – Leaders in Namisindwa district have asked government to upgrade the Ugandan side of Lwakhakha border post shared with Kenya into a modern One- Stop Border Post [OSBP], saying it would boost tax revenue for the government.

According to the leaders, developing Lwakhakha border post would also help in developing the Namisindwa district which was carved out of Manafwa district.

John Musila, the Member of Parliament representing Bubulo East Constituency said last year he lobbied government to allow empty transit trucks that enter Kenya from Uganda to use Lwakhakha border as a way of decongesting Malaba OSBP.

He said since empty trucks started entering Kenya using the Lwakhakha border, the border area and the entire Lwakhakha Town Council have been transformed economically.

Musila said currently, the population of the area has grown, business boomed, and the land value has also increased.

The leaders made the remarks during the belated International Women’s Day celebrations held at Lwakhakha Town Council.

Peace Khalayi, a businesswoman said that if the area is turned into an OSBP,  government is going to earn more revenue.

She said government must consider developing Lwakhakha border it located on a tarmac highway, and has government buildings.

Aramazan Wabuko, the Namisindwa district National Resistance Movement [NRM] Chairperson told the area Members of Parliaments to remind the government about the tarmacking of the Lwakhakha-Munamba-Bumbo road as was promised last year.

He said tarmacking the road would increase agricultural production and trade in the area since their agriculture products like onions, cabbage among others will be transported to Mbale City, and other areas for sale.

Nebokhe Walukawu, the Speaker of Namisindwa District Council thanked President Museveni for empowering women in Uganda.

The chief guest, Robert Wandwasi, the Member of Parliament representing Bungokho South County in Mbale district, cautioned mothers against misusing the liberty they have. He said some wives mistreat their husbands and wear trousers claiming that they are equal to men.

Wandwasi urged them to follow religious and African cultural norms meant to ensure stable families.
