Members of Otwo-Can VSLA call for financial literacy training

KWANIA – Otwo-Can Village Savings and Loan Association [VSLA] members in Aduku Sub-county, Kwania district have appealed to the government to help train them in financial literacy, saying it would enable them to run their businesses better.

Otwo-Can Village Savings and Loan Association is a local saving group for people living with HIV/AIDs. The group which was established in 2018 currently has 30 members with a current loan portfolio of Shs 50 million.

The group members made the appeal days ago while receiving treated mosquito nets donated to them by the Collins Ministries Aduku headed by Oscar Ewa, an ambassador for the young people living with HIV/AIDs in northern Uganda.

Juspine Akello, a member of Otwo-Can VSLA, wants government to offer them financial literacy training and provide them with soft loans as a way of helping them fight poverty at the grassroots.

“I want to appeal to the government to consider giving us soft loans and if possible, train us on how to handle money. We need the training to look time and I believe when given the skills we shall develop individually and develop this group as well,” she said.

Another member of this group Grace Akello said: “Most of our members still have poor saving culture and some of those who save money spend it all towards the end of the year. We need sufficient training on how to manage finance to alleviate poverty.”

Some of the members of this group who spoke to our reporter hailed Ewaa under his charity ministry for donating to them mosquito nets. They say the mosquito nets given to them will protect them from malaria.

Ewaa urged the beneficiaries of the mosquito nets to use them so as to protect themselves against the mosquitoes that transmit malaria.
