Kamwenge farmers get platform to air out challenges

KAMWENGE-Kamwenge District Local Government in partnership with the National Alliance of Agricultural Cooperatives [NAAC] has launched an advocacy platform to help farmers dialogue with district officials on the challenges facing them.

The platform, Kamwenge Farmers’ Advocacy Platform, was recently launched at Kamwenge District Local Government headquarters in Kamwenge Town Council.

NAAC is the apex body of agricultural cooperatives that was formed in 2018 to provide customised support services to its members.

According to Ambrose Asingizibwe, the advocacy manager at NAAC, the platform will help the farmers in Kamwenge district to speak with one voice when seeking solutions to their challenges.

“This platform is intended to enable facilitation of smallholder farmers at the district, sub-county, and parish levels through sensitisation and training. This will help in addressing so many challenges affecting the farmers,” Asingizibwe said.

Asingizibwe urged the  farmers to utilsie the platform effectively, saying it will help them to increase household incomes.

James Turyaheebwa, the general secretary Kamwenge Farmers’ Advocacy Platform appealed to members to own the forum, saying it will help them get solutions to the challenges that they face as farmers.

“I am happy that NAAC came up with this intervention that will help farmers and make the work district officials easier, especially the agriculture department. Farmers have had so many challenges but have been lacking a platform to air them out,” Turyaheedwa said.

He was optimistic that using the platform effectively will help both the farmers and the district.

Josephine Karungi, the Kamwenge district LCV chairperson urged farmers in his district to research about the crops they intend to grow, saying it could help them to avoid losses. “You need to always invest the acquired agricultural loans in the crops you have thoroughly researched about,” Karungi said.

She appealed to the farmers and district officials to use the new forum effectively to increase agricultural production at all levels.
