Mbarara City launches rehabilitation of key road ahead of 2026 elections
Launching the project days ago, Mbarara City Mayor Robert Mugabe Kakyebezi cautioned the contractor against shoddy work and stressed the need for timely completion

MBARARA CITY, October 13, 2025 – Mbarara City South Division Council has officially launched the rehabilitation of the vital 14.4-kilometre Nyakayojo-Kicwamba road. The project, valued at Shs 74 million, is part of an effort to boost commerce and connectivity in the rapidly expanding city.
According to William Byaruhanga, Mbarara City Engineer, the scope of work includes bush clearing, shaping, graveling, and the installation of culverts to improve the condition of the road, which has been in a state of disrepair for decades.
Launching the project days ago, Mbarara City Mayor Robert Mugabe Kakyebezi cautioned the contractor against shoddy work and stressed the need for timely completion.
Mayor Kakyebezi also used the opportunity to apologise to residents for the delay in rehabilitating the dilapidated Mutukula-Kinyaza-Kishenyi Road.
“We shall not take a long time before working on the Mutukula-Kinyaza-Kishenyi Road,” he noted. “Remain patient meanwhile, as the government releases the funds, we shall work on it.”
Gerald Tukamuhebwa, Mbarara City South Deputy Resident City Commissioner [RCC], highlighted the expected economic benefits, stating that improved infrastructure would enhance market access for rural farmers.
“Once this road is rehabilitated, it will help the farmers transport their agricultural products, especially matooke [bananas], as Kicwamba is well known as one of the banana-producing areas in western Uganda,” the Deputy RCC said.
However, Tukamuhebwa also warned road users to avoid over speeding to prevent accidents. “Use that road well, don’t over speed. We don’t want to lose people just because the road has been worked on,” he cautioned.
Locals expressed appreciation to the City Council for prioritising road improvements in their area.
Kicwamba ward is significant as it was one of the parishes curved from Rwampara district to increase the population, a measure that enabled Mbarara Municipality to attain city status in 2020.
