Lira University to open faculty of agriculture in Amolatar

LIRA-Lira University is to open a Faculty of Agriculture and Fisheries in Amolatar district after it was offered land there to kick-start the project.

According to the university`s vice chancellor, Prof. Jasper Ogwal Okeng, the land measuring 344 acres is located in Alemere and Agwinyiri sub-counties.

The land was offered by Alemere Farming Cooperative society and Agwinyiri Sub-county.

Briefing the Minister of State for Northern Uganda, Grace Freedom Okwiyucwiny during her tour of Development Initiative for Northern Uganda [DINU] project, Prof Ogwal said acquisition is geared towards rural development.

“Right now, everybody is asking we have not started the Faculty of Agriculture but we are already training primary and secondary teachers in agricultural science,” Ogwal said.

“And to this end, we realised that this region is agriculturally very productive and we have acquired lands in the Center [Amolatar] of the country where we are planning to open a fully pledged Faculty of Agriculture,” he added.

Prof. Ogwal lauded government for donating a tractor to the university, saying it is a positive move geared towards rural development.

Dr. Bernard Omech, the director of research and innovation, said the university has started to deliver on its dreams and promises to the communities to bring sustainable transformation.

Omech is also the coordinator of Sexual Education and Training in Sexual Reproductive Health Right Centre established at the university with funding from the Royal Kingdom of Netherlands.

He added that the northern region is trying to rebuild itself from the Lord’s Resistance Army [LRA] which destroyed livelihoods, but under DINU they are promoting agriculture which include diversification of food production, market access, and as well as improving the health of mothers and children.
