Lango Muslims urged to embrace poverty eradication programmes

LIRA, April 15, 2024 – Supreme Kadhi of Greater Lango Muslim Supreme Administration, Sheikh Muhammad Yusuf Balinda has encouraged the faithful in the sub-region to embrace government programmes aimed at eradicating poverty in the country.

Speaking at Faizan Medina Mosque in Lira City during the celebrations of Eid al-Fitr last Wednesday, Balinda advised the Muslims in Lango to embrace commercial farming through government programmes such as the Parish Development Model [PDM], Operation Wealth Creation [OEC], and others.

“Muslims should embrace government programmes such as the PDM, Emyooga, and Uganda Women Entrepreneurship Programme, all geared towards economic empowerment, and take lead in eradicating poverty,” he said.

“I want to urge Muslims and Non-Muslims to make good use of the available rainfall this period and embark on serious commercial farming to improve household income,” he added.  “I also wish to inform you that laziness and begging have no space in Islam and we don’t encourage it.”

He also encouraged the Muslims to jealously protect the environment. He said he was concerned about the fast rate of destruction of the environment, adding something needs to be done to reverse the trend.

On her part, the Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development, Betty Amongi Akena called upon the Muslim to unite and embrace peace in the community.

Through a message delivered by Rashid Acup, Spokesperson of the Lango Muslim community pledged to support the expansion of the Faizan Medina Mosque, and income generating activities to transform households.
