KIKUUBE – Leaders in Kikuube district have asked President Museveni to intervene and resettle 2,000 people who were evicted from their land in Bukinda parish, Kyangwali Sub-county.
The call by the leaders comes a few days after the evictees were forced out of the camp they had set up on the private land.
The 2,000 people are part of over 60,000 people who were evicted by the Office of the Prime Minister [OPM] in 2013 as officials sought to expand the Kyangwali refugee settlement. The two sides are feuding over 36 square kilometres of land.
The evictees including children and the elderly are currently wandering in Kikuube town council as they have not found a new place to settle.
However, some of the evictees have temporarily camped in the home area of Kikuube district Woman Member of Parliament, Florence Natumanya in Kidoma parish in Kiziranfumbi Sub-county while others have camped at the home area of Buhaguzi County Member of Parliament, Francis Kazini.
When contacted, MP Kazini said no place has been identified to resettle the evictees, even though he added they have approached OPM to help find a lasting solution.
However, he said President Museveni should help resettle the evictees back to their land so that they can be able to grow food and build shelters for themselves.
Peter Banura, Kikuube district chairperson said as leaders, they are concerned about the suffering of the evictees, adding that apart from having nowhere to live, they have no food.
He commended the area MPS who have accepted to host the evictees temporarily and challenged the government to rescue the situation.
Early this year, Museveni directed his principal private secretary Kenneth Omona to work with Kikuube district leaders on the matter and report to him immediately.
However, when contacted to provide the latest as regards Museveni’s directive, Kikuube district resident commissioner, Amlan Tumusiime said nothing fruitful has come out yet.
“I can’t return them back to their land without clear information from the Office of the President. My hands are also tired. There is nothing I can do because the landlord who has accommodated them on his land wants to use it,” he said.
