Kapchorwa: Health centre receives solar system to boost service delivery

Benard Chekasire, a community opinion leader, noted that the lack of electricity has long been a major challenge for rural health facilities in Kapchorwa and neighbouring districts

KAPCHORWA, October 13, 2025 — Sunking Solar Uganda Limited has officially launched its Kapchorwa branch and donated a 500-watt solar system to Kapleiko Health Centre III in Kaptanya Sub-county. The donation aims to improve lighting at the health facility, which provides care to patients both during the day and at night.

The health centre’s staff, and community members described the donation as a “timely and life-saving gesture.” The health centre serves a large rural population but is not connected to the national electricity grid, significantly impacting night-time services and the storage of medicines.

Speaking during the event, Florence Natako, Human Resource Officer at Sunking Solar Uganda, said the donation formed part of the company’s corporate social responsibility initiative.

“At Sunking Solar, we believe that access to clean and reliable energy is a right, not a privilege,” she said. “We chose to donate a 500-watt solar panel to Kapleiko Health Centre III because we understand how essential electricity is in delivering quality healthcare. This system will power lighting, fridges for vaccines, and other medical equipment, ensuring that no mother has to give birth in darkness.”

Natako emphasised that the donation symbolised Sunking’s partnership with local governments in improving lives through sustainable energy solutions.

“Our launch of the Kapchorwa branch is not merely business expansion, it is a commitment to serve the people of the Sebei region, to create jobs, and to support institutions that serve our communities. We aim to bring light to every home, every school, and every health centre,” she added.

She further noted that the donation was part of Sunking’s broader programme to support health and education facilities in rural areas without access to the national grid.

Isaac Muloka, the In-Charge of Kapleiko Health Centre III, expressed deep appreciation for the support, highlighting that the facility had long struggled to provide emergency services at night due to the lack of electricity.

“Before this donation, we relied on small solar lamps and sometimes even torches to attend to patients at night,” Muloka explained. “Our maternity ward was often in complete darkness, which posed serious risks to both mothers and healthcare workers.”

“This solar system will completely transform our operations. We can now conduct deliveries safely at any hour.”

He added that the power supply would also support vaccine storage, preserve laboratory reagents, and power small medical devices, all contributing to improved service delivery and saving lives.

“We are grateful to Sunking Solar for remembering us. This is a significant step forward in improving healthcare in our community.”

The event was attended by hospital management, local leaders, and community members, all of whom commended Sunking for its generosity and forward-thinking initiative.

Benard Chekasire, a community opinion leader, noted that the lack of electricity has long been a major challenge for rural health facilities in Kapchorwa and neighbouring districts.

“This is what we call development with a heart,” he said. “When companies like Sunking step in, they don’t just bring light, they bring hope. We thank them for reaching out to Kapleiko.”
