Fighting poverty: Women urged to embrace govt programmes

TORORO – Women in Tororo district have been urged to embrace government programmes aimed at fighting household poverty in the country.

The vice chairperson Tororo district, Rebecca Akumu, implored the women to engage activities that boost household incomes.

She made the remarks during the belated International Women’s Day celebrations held at Amagoro Court in Tororo district Under the theme, “Equal opportunities in education, science, technology for innovation and a gender equal future”.

“I urge the different stakeholders to join efforts geared towards bridging the gender digital access gap,” she said.

Akumu further urged women to join the various programmes of government that are being implemented at subcounty and parish levels.

She further asked the women to remain submissive to their husbands despite being empowered, arguing that it helps to maintain family stability.

Akumu further said programmes recognising women’s contributions in the development of a country inspires more women to engage in development initiatives in the communities.

The Tororo deputy resident district commissioner, Albert Amula, urged the stakeholders to develop a gender-responsive approach to innovation, science and technology.

“I urge the women of Tororo to actively participate in the social economic programs of government namely Uganda Women Entrepreneurship Programme [UWEP], Parish Development Model [PDM], Agriculture Cluster Development Project [ACDP] and the newly commissioned programme of GROW Project,” he said.

Grow Project supports women’s economic empowerment in the country under the leadership of the Ministry of Gender, Labour, and Social Development in conjunction with the Private Sector Foundation in Uganda so as to narrow the poverty gap and ensure food security.

He emphasised commitment of government towards bridging the gender gap as manifested in the government programmes that focus on women, appointments in government, and affirmative action among others.

Sarah Nyakecho, a prominent farmer in Tororo district, said the government should help revive primary cooperative societies at sub-county level so that they can help farmers get market for their produce.

She further said despite women utilising the available funds under UWEP well, they still face the challenge of limited funds.

“The available funds are not enough to support all the registered women groups.  Women should team up and address the challenges as a team if they are to improve their income levels,” Nyakecho said.
