Buliisa Rural Enterprise Cooperative wants to be supported with tractors
BULIISA – Members of Buliisa Rural Enterprise Cooperative Society Limited in Buliisa district have appealed to Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom Prime Minister, Andrew Byakutaga to help link them to organisations that can support them with tractors.
The cooperative leaders said tractors, if acquired, will help to boost agricultural production and incomes of members.
The Cooperative members made the appeal last Thursday while holding the 16th annual general meeting [AGM] at Albert Nile Hotel in Biiso Town Council, Buliisa district.
According to the board chairperson of the cooperative, Julius Wamara, it was formed in 2006 with a membership of 30 people, but the number has since increased to 1,264.
“We have a loan portfolio of Shs 289 million. We have purchased a plot of land where we want to put our offices. The tractors will help members in opening up their fields for planting,” Wamara said.
Members of the cooperative during the AGM testified how the saving and credit have improved their incomes, investments and general welfare.
Speaking as a chief guest, Byakutaga appreciated the people of Buliisa for embracing development programmes of government and the Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom.
He promised that the kingdom would lobby for support for the cooperative from its development partners.
“We need to recognise the importance of unity which strengthens bonds and development, instead of engaging in divisionism that creates anxiety, tension and unnecessary conflicts,” he said.
He also appreciated the people of Buliisa for the unwavering support and loyalty to the Kingdom, but also castigated leaders who want to divide the kingdom’s subjects who have been living in harmony and diversity.
He highlighted the various Kingdom development programmes which its subjects can tap into to develop themselves.
The members of the cooperative appreciated the support the kingdom has given them and promised to mobilise more people to join the cooperative.
