Entebbe Airport sees rise in passenger numbers

ENTEBBE– The Uganda Civil Aviation Authority [UCAA ] has reported a significant increase in the number of international passengers handled at Entebbe International Airport in the month of August 2022.

The authority’s spokesperson, Vianney Luggya, without revealing the revenue statistics, said on Monday that more than 156,081 international passengers were facilitated through Entebbe in August alone compared to the previous months.

According to Luggya, the airport recorded over 73,899 arrivals and over 82,182 departures translating into 5,034 per day.

He says this is a huge difference compared to the average daily 4,892 passengers in July and 4,508 in June, 4,018 in May, and 3,566 at the beginning of this year.

Lugya attributed the increase in passenger traffic to a number of factors, including widespread vaccination across the globe, which has led to the relaxation of some previously stringent travel requirements.

He says there is general confidence among passengers about Entebbe airport, adding that widespread vaccination across the globe and exemption from Polymerase Chain Reaction [PCR] tests for the fully vaccinated passengers also attributed to the increasing traffic,” he said.

He says confidence-building measures by airports and airlines across the globe have reassured passengers. “Travel by pilgrims to and from Mecca was key in July, and so is travel for trade and employment in the Middle East. Conferences are back and tourism numbers are rising,” he says.
