Butebo: Minister Musenero distributes maize seeds to PDM SACCO leaders
BUTEBO – The Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr. Monica Musenero has given out two tonnes of maize seeds to leaders heading the Parish Development Model [PDM] SACCOs in Butebo district.
According to Musenero, the Ministry of Agriculture allocated the maize seeds to legislators to distribute to farmers in their constituencies.
While giving out the maize seeds to the PDM SACCO leaders who sit on the executive committees, Musenero explained that they must be supported since they play a critical role when it comes to the mobilisation and sensitisation of the PDM beneficiaries.
“Giving the PDM leaders maize seeds is a token of appreciation as they are not part of the beneficiaries of the PDM funds borrow and they don’t get any allowance from government,” Musenero said.
She urged the PDM SACCO leaders to desist from selling, eating or even giving the maize seeds to birds. She instead advised them to plant the seeds in the second season.
The Minister hailed the commitment of the PDM SACCO leaders, noting that they have done a tremendous job to sensitise people on the government programme aimed at fighting household poverty.
However, she appealed to them to form a SACCO, saying it will them to save and invest in income generating activities such as commercial farming.
She urged them to be exemplary to their followers by engaging in activities that fight household poverty.
Mwigala Jessica, the secretary for education and health in Butebo district commended Dr. Musenero for donating the maize seeds to PDM SACCO leaders.
“This is a big motivation to them as they do a lot of groundwork without pay,” she said.
The Butebo district LCV chairman, James Okurut said almost all the PDM SACCOs in the district have got money except three of them that had errors in documentation.
“We asserted that they are working closely with the Ministry of ICT to rectify the situation,” he said.
