Minister Musenero urges Butebo farmers to embrace PDM

BUTEBO – The Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr Monica Musenero, has urged residents of Butebo district in eastern Uganda to embrace the Parish Development Model [PDM] in the fight against household poverty.

“People should change their mindset and embrace profitable enterprises in the PDM. Even though communities are stuck on growing rice, the yields have drastically gone down and it is no longer sustainable,” Musenero said.

She advised the leaders to engage communities/enterprise groups before deciding on the enterprises to invest in.

According to her, the community in Butebo needs to engage in farming activities like dairy farming, poultry, fish and passion fruit farming, coffee, maize, rice, beans, vegetables, cotton, millet, pineapples, and tomatoes among others.

Musenero was days ago in the district monitoring government programmes.

She added that PDM’s main goal is to ensure that the livelihoods of Ugandans improve.

“I urge residents to participate in the PDM. The money government has been putting in the programme is meant to help fight poverty among people,” Musenero said.

She advised residents to ensure they get registered with the constituted Parish Development Model SACCOs [PDM SACCOs] which are multi-purpose cooperatives at the parish level.

Musenero also urged the residents and district leaders to be transparent and use the PDM money productively to uplift themselves from poverty.

She further advised the beneficiaries of the programme to engage in economic activities such as coffee and cassava growing.

Launched in February 2022, PDM is a government multi-sectoral strategy for socio-economic transformation, aimed at moving 39 percent of Ugandan households still in the subsistence economy to the money economy.

For five financial years, beginning with the 2022/2023 financial year, government will be spending over a trillion shillings on the programme, with each of 10,594 parishes getting Shs 100 million revolving fund each financial year for enterprise groups to borrow and engage in production.
