Bunyoro church moves to boost nutrition of inmates in Masindi prisons

MASINDI-In a bid to ensure a balanced diet for inmates at both Masindi prison and Kabalye Juvenile Remand Home, Bunyoro Lutheran Church in partnership with Seeds for Souls East Africa and Day 3SEEDS USA has embarked on improving the nutrition of inmates kept in the two correctional facilities.

According to Joseph Kiirya Wegooina who doubles as the public relations officer for the local Lutheran Church and Seeds of Souls for East Africa, they distributed assorted vegetable seeds to the two government facilities, with the planting and sowing of the seeds ongoing.

He said the seeds distributed were for; tomatoes, onions, cabbage,  carrots, watermelon, cucumber, okra, and the new variety of beans code-named Mungo beans, as well as green paper.

“The initiative is part of the church’s efforts to promote agriculture in the country and ensure the good health of community members,” he said, adding that Seeds for Souls East Africa is further implementing a seed multiplication programme for Mungo beans and okra.

Speaking to this reporter, Wagoina noted that under the programme, farmers, especially widows are given the varieties and upon harvest, the organisation buys the seeds from farmers at the price above the market value.

“This is aimed at empowering our people economically because as a church, we need to serve and empower the community,” he noted.

Wegoina said that over 200 farmers across the country are piloting this programme.

Receiving the seeds on behalf of the prison authorities,  ASP John Michael Opolot said he was optimistic the health disorders for the inmates would greatly reduce.

“We thank the church and its partners for this initiative and as prison authorities, we highly welcome this programme,” Oplot said.

On her part, Judith Magambo the in-charge Kyabalye Juvenile Remand Home described the distribution of seeds as timely since the season has just begun.

“We appreciate you for minding about us because good nutrition is important for the health and growth of the juveniles,” Magambi said.
