African trio make history as Côte d’Ivoire, Morocco and South Africa storm into World Cup knockout stage

Côte d’Ivoire booked their place in the Round of 32 after a composed 2-0 victory over Curaçao in their final Group E match in Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA/ATLANTA, June 26, 2026 — African football celebrated a landmark moment at the FIFA World Cup 2026 as Côte d’Ivoire, Morocco and South Africa all secured places in the knockout rounds with memorable performances that underlined the continent’s growing influence on the global stage.

Côte d’Ivoire produced one of the standout moments of the tournament by reaching the World Cup knockout stage for the first time in their history, while Morocco continued their impressive rise with an unbeaten group campaign and South Africa completed a historic breakthrough of their own.

Pépé fires Côte d’Ivoire into history

Côte d’Ivoire booked their place in the Round of 32 after a composed 2-0 victory over Curaçao in their final Group E match in Philadelphia.

Knowing only victory would guarantee qualification, Emerse Faé’s side delivered under pressure, with Nicolas Pépé scoring twice to secure one of the most important results in the nation’s football history.

The Elephants struck early when Yan Diomandé drove forward and delivered a low pass across goal for Pépé to finish from close range in the seventh minute.

The early breakthrough settled Côte d’Ivoire, although Curaçao threatened through Tahith Chong and captain Leandro Bacuna, forcing the Ivorians to remain disciplined throughout the opening half.

A crucial defensive intervention from Ange-Yoan Bonny just before the interval preserved the lead and maintained momentum.

The decisive moment came in the 64th minute when Ibrahim Sangaré split the Curaçao defence with an incisive pass. Pépé cut inside and curled a superb finish into the far corner to complete his brace and confirm a famous victory.

The result saw Côte d’Ivoire finish as Group E runners-up and advance to face the runners-up from Group I in Dallas on 30 June.

For Ivorian football, qualification carried deep significance.

Previous generations featuring legends such as Didier Drogba and Yaya Touré had failed to move beyond the group stage during appearances in 2006, 2010 and 2014. This current squad has now broken that barrier and opened a new chapter for the Elephants.

Morocco dare to dream after dramatic comeback

Morocco also advanced after recovering twice to defeat Haiti 4-2 in Atlanta and finish the group stage unbeaten.

The Atlas Lions ended Group C level on points with Brazil but finished second on goal difference, setting up a Round of 32 encounter against the eventual winners of Group F.

Head coach Mohamed Ouahbi used the occasion to deliver a bold message, insisting Morocco should now believe they can compete for the biggest prize in football.

Morocco endured a difficult start as Haiti twice took the lead, but the Atlas Lions responded through Achraf Hakimi and Ismail Saibari before half-time.

Second-half tactical adjustments transformed the contest.

Substitutes Soufiane Rahimi and Yassine Jassim both found the net to complete the turnaround and secure qualification.

Ouahbi praised his players’ response and said Morocco’s mentality had changed.

He said the team now possessed the confidence, structure and ambition required to compete with any opponent, adding that their long-term objective should be to challenge for the World Cup title while continuing to respect every opponent.

Morocco’s latest progress builds on their remarkable semi-final run in 2022 and further strengthens their position as one of Africa’s leading football nations.

South Africa seal famous breakthrough

South Africa completed the African celebration with a determined 1-0 victory over South Korea to reach the World Cup knockout stage for the first time.

Bafana Bafana entered the decisive Group A encounter knowing only victory would keep their hopes alive and delivered a disciplined display to earn a historic result.

South Korea started strongly and nearly took an early lead, but Aubrey Modiba produced a vital goal-line clearance.

As confidence grew, South Africa began creating opportunities through Relebohile Mofokeng, Thapelo Maseko and Evidence Makgopa.

The breakthrough arrived in the 63rd minute after substitute Tshepang Moremi made an immediate impact.

Moremi delivered a perfectly weighted pass into Maseko’s path and the winger calmly finished into the bottom corner.

South Africa then defended resolutely as captain Ronwen Williams and defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi led a disciplined rearguard action to frustrate sustained South Korean pressure.

After six tense minutes of stoppage time, the final whistle sparked celebrations among players and supporters.

The victories by Côte d’Ivoire, Morocco and South Africa represent one of Africa’s strongest collective performances at a World Cup and reinforce growing confidence that the continent’s teams can challenge beyond the group stage and compete with the world’s elite.
