Minister calls for stronger evidence-based statistics to support Uganda’s development agenda
KAMPALA, August 7, 2026 — The Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, Henry Musasizi, together with the State Minister for Planning, Amos Lugoloobi, and the Minister of State for General Duties, Cissy Mulondo, has urged the Uganda Bureau of Statistics [UBOS] to strengthen the production of evidence-based statistics to support national planning, budgeting, policy formulation and development monitoring.
The ministers made the remarks on Thursday at the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development offices in Kampala while receiving a briefing from Albert Byamugisha, Chairman of the UBOS Board of Directors, on the Bureau’s performance, achievements, strategic priorities and planned interventions.
Musasizi commended UBOS for providing credible, timely and reliable official statistics that continue to inform decision-making and support Uganda’s socio-economic transformation.
He said UBOS should continue to strengthen the production of “evidence-based statistics to support national planning, budgeting, policy formulation and development monitoring.”
The minister also emphasised the need for all Ministries, Departments and Agencies [MDAs] to establish and maintain functional statistics units.
He further called for “stronger coordination and alignment between UBOS and the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development [MoFPED], particularly in budget preparation and other key administrative processes.”
Speaking during the briefing, Byamugisha reaffirmed UBOS’s commitment to advancing Uganda’s development through the production and coordination of high-quality official statistics.
He said UBOS “leads the National Statistical System [NSS], bringing together government institutions, local governments, the private sector, academia, civil society organisations, development partners and data users under harmonised statistical standards and quality assurance frameworks.”
Byamugisha also expressed appreciation for government of Uganda’s continued support and highlighted UBOS’s ongoing efforts to strengthen statistical capacity across MDAs, local governments and other stakeholders through the Plan for National Statistical Development [PNSD].
He said “the plan is aligned with the National Development Plan [NDP] to ensure that official statistics remain relevant and responsive to Uganda’s development priorities.”
