Elections: Gov’t delays reopening of schools

KAMPALA, January 19, 2026 — The Government of Uganda has postponed the reopening of learning institutions across the country following the conclusion of the presidential elections.

Yesterday, the Electoral Commission [EC] announced Yoweri Kaguta Museveni of the National Resistance Movement [NRM] as the president-elect. He defeated seven other candidates, including the National Unity Platform [NUP] candidate, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, and Nathan Nandala Mafabi among others.

On January 6, 2026, the Ministry of Education and Sports had initially announced that all schools and educational institutions across the country would reopen on February 2, 2026.

However, due to the general elections and in order to ensure the safety of all learners, Dr. Kedrice Turyagenda, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education and Sports, has directed that schools and educational institutions will now reopen on February 10, 2026.

This directive applies to all schools, including international schools, tertiary institutions, and universities.

“Vice chancellors, principals, headteachers, parents, guardians, school administrators, students, and the public are hereby notified that Term One of the Academic Year 2026 will run from Tuesday, February 10, 2026, to May 1, 2026. All school administrators are required to adhere strictly to these dates and the approved school calendar,” the Permanent Secretary stated.
