Uganda’s coffee exports surge in May 2025 – new report
The report says Italy remained the top destination for Uganda's coffee, accounting for 39.23 percent of exports, followed by Germany, Sudan, Algeria, and Spain

KAMPALA, June 24, 2025 — Uganda’s coffee exports reached new heights in May 2025, with a total of 793,445 60-kilo bags valued at US$ 243.95 million [approximately Shs 875.142 billion] exported, according to the latest Monthly Coffee Report released by the Ministry of Agriculture Animal Industry and Fisheries [MAAIF].
According to the report, this marked a 43.59 percent increase in quantity and a staggering 91.89 percent rise in value compared to May 2024. The average export price stood at US$ 5.12 per kilogramme, slightly lower than April 2025 but significantly higher than May 2024.
Robusta coffee dominated the exports, accounting for 691,176 bags valued at US$ 203.50 million, while Arabica contributed 102,269 bags worth US$ 40.45 million. Sustainable Arabica fetched the highest price at US$ 8.50 per kilogramme, reflecting growing demand for premium coffee.
The surge in exports was attributed to a robust harvest in Masaka and southwestern regions, coupled with improved weather conditions in Brazil that eased supply concerns.
Year-on-year figures
Over the past 12 months [June 2024-May 2025], Uganda exported 7.43 million bags worth US$2.09 billion [approximately Shs 7.524 trillion], a 22.24 percent increase in quantity and a remarkable 93.61 percent rise in value compared to the previous year.
The report says Italy remained the top destination for Uganda’s coffee, accounting for 39.23 percent of exports, followed by Germany, Sudan, Algeria, and Spain. ‘‘Europe continued to dominate as the primary market, importing 67 percent of Uganda’s coffee, while exports to African countries rose to 18 percent,’’ says the report.
Promotional activities also played a key role in boosting Uganda’s coffee profile, the report argues. ‘‘At the 135th Canton Fair in Guangzhou, Uganda showcased specialty Arabica and fine Robusta, attracting over 3,000 visitors and securing trade leads from China, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar. The Uganda-China Coffee Awareness Tour further strengthened trade ties, with stakeholders exploring Uganda’s coffee value chain and expressing interest in value-added investments.’’
Locally, farm-gate prices for coffee remained competitive, with Robusta Kiboko averaging Shs 6,250 per kilogramme and Arabica parchment at Shs 14,000 per kilogramme.
Extensive farmer training programs reached over 2,400 farmers, focusing on agronomic practices, pest management, and post-harvest handling.
Looking ahead, Uganda’s coffee exports for June 2025 are projected to reach 700,000 bags as the main harvest season in Greater Masaka and the fly crop north of the equator concludes. With global coffee consumption expected to rise, Uganda’s coffee sector is poised for continued growth and international recognition.
“Uganda’s visible presence at one of the world’s largest trade fairs reaffirmed its rising profile as a competitive origin for specialty coffee in international markets,” says the report.
Outlook for June 2025
Uganda’s Coffee exports are projected to be 700,000 60kilobags. The main harvest season in Greater Masaka and southwest and the flycrop North of Equator is at the tail end.
