Kwania: Excitement as farmers receive chicks for rearing
An agricultural officer attached to Ayabi town council in Kwania district encouraged the farmers to regularly vaccinate and feed the chicks so that they remain healthy as they grow.
KWANIA, July 10, 2024 – A section of farmers in Kwania North County in Kwania district are excited after receiving kroiler chicks donated to them by the area Member of Parliament Bob Okae.
The drawn from different groups in four sub-counties and two town councils within Kwania North Constituency received 15 chicks each. The development is part of MP Okae’s initiative toward poverty alleviation in his constituency.
Addressing the farmers on Wednesday at his country home Banya Parish, Inomo Subcounty in Kwania district, MP Okae told the beneficiaries that the chicks received would improve their household incomes.
“The chicks are few but gradually we shall move forward in the fight against poverty. I want to encourage you to use these chicks to improve your household incomes,” he said, he said adding that from the poultry projects, farmers can be able to buy goats, and then cows.
“Some of us you see progressing today started small. In fact, I started from a very poor background from chicken to goats but I never gave up. If your friend can do it why not you? That is why as a Member of Parliament, I thought it wise to give you kroiler chicks which mature fast,” he added.
For his part, Mwanga Tonny Blear, Banya Parish Male Councillor asked Okae to lobby for more projects to move his people from subsistence farming to the money economy.
“I want to extend my sincere appreciation to our MP Bob Okae for this timely poultry project. How I wish you continue lobbying for more projects of this kind to move our people out of poverty,” he added.
Farmers speak out
Ikwera Basqueli, a farmer in Inomo Subcounty expressed excitements upon receiving the chicks. I am very happy for the chicks given to me by MP Bob Okae. With the knowledge, I received from the extension officers today, I believe the chicks will change my life for the better,” he said.
Another farmer, Betty Ojur from Aboko Parish in Aduku Subcounty said the 15 chicks received would help her improve her livelihood.”
On his part, Rajab Onuk, an agricultural officer attached to Ayabi town council in Kwania district encouraged the farmers to regularly vaccinate and feed the chicks so that they remain healthy as they grow.
Onuk said the 15 kroilers given to each farmer would change their lives. “Each kroiler chick given to you is valued at Shs 10, 000. Out of the 15 chicks you have Shs 150, 000 but after a period of only six months, you will have about Shs 1.5 million if you can carefully take care of them,” he said.
