PDM: Groups urged to pick piggery and poultry enterprises

LIRA – Beneficiaries of the Parish Development Model [PDM] in the Lango Sub-region have been advised to select piggery and poultry enterprises if they want to make quick returns on their investments.

Margaret Adupa, a retired secondary school teacher, and the chief executive officer of Telela Victoria Farm in Omito Ward, Lira City said on Tuesday at her farm that piggery and poultry enterprises are the easiest to manage and more profitable compared to other farming enterprises such as growing maize, soybean, beans, fish farming among others.

According to government, PDM has 14 key commodities which include maize, cassava, coffee, beans, bananas, Irish potato, sweet potato, millet, sugar cane, cattle [for beef, dairy,] tea, cocoa, and fish.

The approach seeks to create income generating activities opportunities at the 10,594 parishes across the country.

In the sub-region, several PDM enterprise groups/ beneficiaries have selected soybean growing, maize, beans, and fish farming. Government under the PDM is to provide Shs 100 million every financial year to each parish in Uganda to invest in the selected enterprises.

Adupa said proper care, treatment, and good hygiene are important to avoid disease outbreaks, although the farmer earns from mature pigs, piglets, and waste products [manure].

Adupa says she spends Shs 500, 000 monthly on feeds and treatment of the animals.

She started the project in 2006 with only four piglets, and now she is earning reasonable profits from the business that also attracts customers outside of Lira city and district. “Some of my customers come from as far as Pader, Agago, and Gulu districts,” she adds.

“Rearing pigs is not so stressful like other enterprises because you reap a lot within a period of one year since pigs produce twice,” Adupa said.

She added that her potential customers buy 10 pigs at once, giving her chance to grow her business.

Adupa says she initially expanded from four pigs to 340 now and has started a poultry project.

She says poultry rearing gives the farmer quick returns within a short time if well managed.
