MASINDI – Believers at All Saints Church in Masindi-Kitara Diocese, Masindi district have launched a campaign to raise Shs 4 billion to construct a new cathedral that will accommodate more members.
The drive to raise the money was launched on Sunday in Masindi town by Andrew Byakutaga, the Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom Prime Minister. He also presided over the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction project.
Byakutaga challenged the religious leaders in Bunyoro Sub-region to partner with the kingdom in championing the gospel of development.
“Partner with the kingdom in mobilising people to work hard such that they are able to benefit from the oil opportunities. We shall be able to have people with money to contribute towards the development of our churches if they have money,” he said.
He said Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom has been closely working with the church in different areas of development. We have trained different women groups from the two dioceses on having model households. King Sir Tito Winyi liked the church so much. That Is why he offered land for the construction of different churches in Bunyoro,” Byakutaga noted.
He further called upon the people of Bunyoro to embrace institutions like the Uganda Petroleum Institute Kigumba, which he said meets international standards for training people to work in the oil sector.
“If you want your children to work in the oil sector, take them to Uganda Petroleum Institute Kigumba. I am not yet happy with the small number of people from here [Bunyoro Kingdom] at the institute. Prepare your children to work in the oil sector by educating them. The religious leaders should take lead in mobilising our people to join this institution,” Byakutaga advised.
He also advised Bunyoro’s subjects not to be diverted by the people agitating for unnecessary secessions, adding that there should be harmony in the kingdom.
Byakutaga further said that the kingdom launched a campaign of encouraging people to have model househols saying that so far 200 households have been reached and the people have embraced the campaign.
The kingdom contributed Shs 2 million towards the construction of the new church building.
Joab Businge, the Head of Laity Masindi All Saints Church who is also Member of Parliament Masindi Municipality said that they decided to construct the new church building to accommodate more Christians who come to pray, also adding that the old church structure is out of fashion.
“The one we are in now is small and the population is growing. It is also not matching with the standard of the municipality. The old church was built when we were in a town council but now we are in a municipality,” Businge said.
He further noted they have so far mobilised Shs 160 million to kick-start the the construction project.
Rev. Ronald Mukuru, the Vicar All Saints Church explained to this reporter that they expect the construction works to take a period of eight years.
“I request the believers and the well wishers to generously contribute towards the construction of the new church which will give glory to God,” said Mukuru.
