Vaccination against FMD kicks off in Teso Sub-region

KATAKWI-At least over 40,000 doses of vaccines were received to vaccinate cattle in the Teso Sub-region districts hit by foot and mouth disease [ FMD ], this news website can say.

In late October, FMD outbreak was reported in the districts of Katakwi, Bukedea, and Karamoja Sub-region.

Following the outbreak, Robert Ojala, the regional veterinary doctor said authorities imposed a partial quarantine in the neighbouring and affected districts where vaccines are being now administered to cattle.

According to him, the only way to stop the spread of FMD is by vaccinating animals and restricting the movement of livestock animals.

“We have restricted movement of animals in and out of these areas, and we have to make sure trucks are inspected well to ascertain the animals are healthy,” Ojala said.

He also urged farmers to be vigilant and report cases of suspected animals so that the disease is managed.

Joseph Ochoa, deputy chief accounting officer, Bukedea confirmed that they have received 25,000 doses and began vaccinating animals in areas of Aminit and Kamutur sub-counties as well as neighbouring counties.

Besides, Ochom also says about 20,000 vaccines have been received for lumpy skin a disease that affects goats and sheep and 10,000 of pester Des petits ruminants [PPR].

He noted they have organised talkshows on local radio stations to create awareness amongst the farmers.

Ochom cautioned officials issuing animal permits to be vigilant and ensure that only animals cleared by veterinary officers are allowed to move.

“We want to ensure that only healthy animals are sold in the market and persons in charge should issue permits,” Ochom said.

John Ojangole, a livestock farmer in Soroti said he ensures that the clothes and footwear of his herdsmen are free from mud and manure to avoid contact with the animals.

He said being a retired agricultural officer, he has put in place biosecurity measures for keeping records of visitors and livestock.
