Uganda’s annual coffee exports earn Shs 8 trillion

KAMPALA, July 30, 2025 — Uganda’s coffee exports for the twelve months [Financial Year 2024/25] were 7.77 million bags, valued at US$ 2.22 billion [approximately Shs 8 trillion], compared to 6.13 million bags worth US$ 1.14 billion [approximately Shs 4.1 trillion] in the previous year [Financial Year 2023/24], according to the latest Monthly Coffee Report – June 2025, released by the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries [MAAIF].

The report says the new figures represent an increase of 26.88 percent in quantity and 93.66 percent in value,” the report states.

In June 2025 alone, Uganda exported 1,014,062 bags of coffee, generating US$ 289.60 million. “This reflects an increase of 51.90 percent in quantity and 78.09 percent in value compared to the same month last year,” says MAAIF. This comprises 907,058 bags of Robusta valued at US$ 248.57 million and 107,006 bags of Arabica valued at US$ 41.03 million

According to the report, the significant increase in exports was driven by a good harvest in most coffee-growing regions, particularly in Greater Masaka and the South Western regions. “The value of coffee exports rose due to high global coffee prices, which were influenced by supply concerns in Brazil and Vietnam — the world’s top producers of Arabica and Robusta coffee respectively — both of which experienced prolonged dry weather conditions,” the report adds.

Outlook for July
Uganda’s coffee exports for July are projected to reach 900,000 60-kilogramme bags. The main harvest season in Greater Masaka and the South West, as well as the fly crop north of the equator, is nearing its end. MAAIF’s assessment indicates that farmers and traders are currently holding onto their stocks in anticipation of improved coffee prices.

The report further notes that 68 percent of the total export volume in June was shipped by the top 10 exporters out of 91 companies that participated, compared to 65 percent in May 2025.

Global Situation
Global coffee production for 2025/26 is forecast to rise by 4.3 million bags year-on-year to a record 178.7 million, owing to continued recovery in Vietnam and Indonesia, as well as record output in Ethiopia.

World coffee bean exports are projected to increase by 700,000 bags to 122.3 million, with gains from Vietnam, Ethiopia, and Indonesia expected to more than offset declines from Brazil and Colombia. With global consumption forecast at a record 169.4 million bags, ending inventories are projected to remain tight at 22.8 million bags, according to the United States Department of Agriculture’s Coffee: World Markets and Trade report – June 2025.
