Tororo district launches disbursement of PDM funds

TORORO – There was excitement in Tororo district days ago following the launch of the disbursement of the Parish Development Model [ PDM ] funds to the intended beneficiaries.

Under the PDM, government intends to move 3.5 million households in the subsistence economy to the money economy by investing about Shs 1 trillion every financial year.

The programme launched in February 2022 is to run for five years and targets the agricultural value chain where beneficiaries are to engage in enterprises like coffee, bananas, groundnuts, maize, beans, poultry, piggery, and several others.

While launching the disbursement of the PDM funds at Tororo district headquarters, the Minister of State for Defense and Veteran Affairs, Jacob Oboth-Oboth, told the beneficiaries that their respective enterprises would get funded.

He further said that government is committed to ensuring the socio-economic transformation of Uganda through the PDM where each parish in Uganda is to get Shs 100mln every year for income generating activities.

“More money will be sent to SACCOs and PDM will succeed with the involvement of all stakeholders,” he said.

The Minister cautioned the PDM beneficiaries against misusing the funds given to them to fight poverty in their households, warning that they would be penalised, since they are supposed to refund the money to the parish revolving fund.

The Minister also urged the PDM SACCO leaders against discrimination as they allocate funds, stating that the money is supposed to help all the poor get out of poverty.

On his part, Tororo district LCV chairperson John Okea urged the beneficiaries to use PDM to transform their households.

He said the district had recruited key personnel and urged the parish chiefs and community development officers to work with the PDM beneficiaries to achieve positive results.

The resident district commissioner Tororo, Nixon Owole said poverty is the biggest enemy of Uganda that should not be given chance to thrive, saying it is the reason why government introduced the PDM.

“The government has initiated the PDM to address the challenge of poverty across the country,” he said.

He told the politicians that the success of PDM would relieve them of the pressure from the voters who ask for assistance, further urging the leaders to get updated about the programme before criticising its implementation.

He urged the technical persons and the PDM SACCO leadership to follow the guidelines for its implementation.
