Lira City farmer suffers loss as floods submerge fish ponds

LIRA -The chief executive officer of Telela Agri-tourism Farm, one of the progressive farmers in the Lango Sub- region, Tom Anyii is counting losses after recent floods submerged some of his fish ponds sweeping off about 40,000 mature fish in the process.

Anyii, a resident of Telela cell, Ngetta Ward in Lira City East Division, Lira City said floods submerged four his eight fish ponds, losing fish worth about Shs 200 million.

“I am still stressed, disgusted and do not know what to do right now because of the losses I incurred,” Anyii, who farms tilapia and catfish species said on Tuesday.

Anyii who started commercial farming 15 years ago also does beekeeping, citrus farming, poultry and rabbit rearing among others.

However, he started fish farming two years ago after realising there was an overwhelming demand for fish both in Uganda and outside.

Anyii said he usually sells mature fish locally at Shs 8000 per kilogramme.

He said Development Initiative for Northern Uganda [DINU], a flagship programme funded by European Union and supervised by the Office of the Prime Minister donated a fish smoking kiln machine to him but now it remains idle after he lost all the mature fish as floods submerged his fish ponds.
