Tororo: Construction of Shs 716mln irrigation scheme launched

TORORO – The Ministry of Water and Environment recently launched the construction of   Gule Water Irrigation Scheme in Tororo district.

The project being established in Iyolwa town council aims at improving people’s livelihood through promotion of modern agricultural practices and protecting the wetlands.

The solar-powered irrigation scheme is to be constructed by Nexus Green Limited at a cost of Shs 716 million.

Rogers Masaba, assistant manager at the Water for Production Regional Center East within the Ministry of Water and Environment, stressed the importance of monitoring and supervision by Tororo district leaders to ensure the successful execution of the project.

John Okea, the Chairperson of Tororo district, urged the local residents to embrace the project and extend their support to the contractor.

The ministry has plans to construct 687 water irrigation sites nationwide, and Tororo district is set to benefit from two irrigation sites this fiscal year: Gule and Amagoro irrigation sites. The projects are aimed at improving economic conditions and nutritional levels of communities through enhancing food security.

The district chairperson Tororo, John Okea urged the people of Iyolwa town council to embrace the programme and support the contractor as he undertakes construction works.

The deputy resident district commissioner of Tororo, Albert Amula, reiterated the commitment of government to supporting farmers through irrigation projects, saying adverse effects of climate change that have impacted negatively agricultural production in the area.

“I appreciate the ministry for  the irrigation project since it is going to increase production and productivity in the area.  It is also going to transform the community  from subsistence economy to the money economy since many of them are under the Parish Development Model which has a number of enterprises that are beneficial to the farmers,” he said.

He urged the contractor to ensure value for money as construction and employ the local people on the project depending on their respective skills.

Joesph Olowo, a farmer, hailed the government for fulfilling the promise of extending to the area water for irrigation.

He asked fellow farmers to always embrace government programmes.
