Teso urged to tap into oil exploration opportunities
NGORA, December 13, 2023 – President Yoweri Museveni has said the second oil exploration for Uganda will take place soon, the country having discovered, and is preparing to drill its first oil in the Albertine Graben by 2025.
The oil exploration in Teso, according to Museveni, is expected to happen in Kadama-Moroto Basin and Lake Kyoga Basin.
According to State Minister for Minerals, Sidronius Okaasai who represented Museveni during the burial of the Late Kumi Bishop Emeritus Rt. Rev. Thomas Edison Erigei in Ngora district on Monday, oil exploration will be carried out in the districts of Bukedea, Kumi, Katakwi, Ngora, Pallisa, Serere, Kabaremaido and Soroti well known for growing crops like sweet potatoes, cassava, millet, sorghum, sim sim, ground nuts, and others.
Museveni urged the people in Teso Sub-region take advantage of the opportunity to achieve development.
Museveni stated that Teso which lies in in Kyoga Basin will be the second to be explored.” If that happens, use that opportunity to cause transformation,” he said in a speech read for him by minister Okaasai.
The President who said the third oil exploration would be in Hoima Basin, urged the clergy, politicians and leadership of the cultural institutions to pursue government programmes aimed at eradicating poverty.
Museveni then donated Shs 10 million which was handed to the widow of the late bishop Erigei and promised to meet the family later.
Musa Ecweru, the State Minister for Transport and Works urged the area politicians and clergy to care for the retired religious leaders, saying they need help.
” Am cautioning you my dear politicians and clergy remember these people while they are still on earth even after they leave service, they need our support,” he said.
Meanwhile Kenneth Ongola, Minister of Teso Affairs noted that the diocese of Kumi has always had challenges.
He pledged to work with the leaders in the diocese to ensure that peace prevails.” I will not only pray for you, but I will work with you to see that there is peace in Kumi,” he said.
The Chairperson of the National Resistance Movement [NRM] for Eastern Uganda, Mike Mukula stressed the importance of cultivating unity in Teso, stating that unless there is unity in the region, it will remain in poverty.
Hellen Adoa, the State Minister for Fisheries who doubles as Serere District Woman Member of Parliament, decried the increasing cases of cattle theft. Among others, Teso Sub-region borders Karamoja region where cattle rustling still takes place, and sometimes, the rustlers are not shy to raid the former for cattle.
