Teachers’ cooperative union to hold Special General Meeting in June
On April 1, 2026, member SACCOs will hold further Special General Meetings to elect their Boards of Directors and other organs, as well as to nominate delegates to the Union

KAMPALA, February 3, 2026 – The Walimu Cooperative Union Limited [WCUL] is preparing to hold a Special General Meeting [SGM] on June 27, 2026, according to a public notice.
According to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Co-operatives [MTIC], the meeting will be convened pursuant to Section 2 [2] of the Co-operative Societies Act, Cap 107, and Regulation 21[4] of the Co-operative Societies Regulations, 1992.
The Registrar of Co-operative Societies and Commissioner for Co-operative Policy and Development at MTIC, Robert Bariyo Barigye, who called for the meeting said it is in compliance with a court order issued recently, under Miscellaneous Cause No. 095 of 2025.
Barigye stated that elections for the Board of Directors and other organs of the Union will be conducted during the June 27 meeting. The current Board is chaired by Stephen Nabende.
Prior to this, a Special General Meeting of WCUL will be held on May 15, 2026, to elect a Vetting Committee. The Vetting Committee serves as an independent and interim body responsible for assessing candidates for leadership positions, including the Board and the Supervisory Committee.
Its role will be to ensure that candidates meet all legal and by-law requirements through due diligence on qualifications, reputation and experience, in line with good governance standards.
Meanwhile, Special General Meetings of member SACCOs will be conducted between March 1- 31, 2026, to elect their respective vetting committees.
On April 1, 2026, member SACCOs will hold further Special General Meetings to elect their Boards of Directors and other organs, as well as to nominate delegates to the Union.
Barigye emphasised that only compliant member SACCOs will be allowed to participate in the elections to be held at the Union’s Head Office in Kiwatule, Kampala.
“All member and affiliate SACCOs must be in good standing with Walimu Co-operative Union Limited before the elections scheduled for June 27, 2026, and are therefore reminded to fulfil all eligibility requirements,” he said.
Walimu Cooperative Union Limited is a teacher-based savings and credit institution established to economically empower and support teachers. The Union was registered on December 24, 2015, under registration number 10739/RCS, within the cooperative regulatory framework. Its objective is to improve teachers’ access to economic opportunities and social livelihoods.
