Tanzania’s First Gentleman dies aged 65

Hassan, a retired agricultural officer and academic, died at 8 a.m. on Monday while receiving treatment for a heart condition in Zanzibar

DODOMA, September 7, 2026 — Hafidh Ameir Hassan, the husband of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan and the country’s first First Gentleman, has died at the age of 65.

Hassan, a retired agricultural officer and academic, died at 8 a.m. on Monday, September 7, while receiving treatment for a heart condition in Zanzibar.

The announcement was made by Vice President Deogratius Ndjembi, who expressed sadness over the death.

“We are saddened to announce the death of Hafidh Ameir Hassan, the husband of President Samia Suluhu Hassan. He died today at 8 a.m. in Zanzibar, where he was receiving treatment for heart problems,” Ndjembi said.

Hafidh Ameir and President Samia Suluhu Hassan were married in 1978 and have four children.

Funeral arrangements are ongoing in Zanzibar, according to the Vice President.
