South Africa to host major conference on cooperatives in Africa

JOHANNESBURG– African cooperators and other stakeholders will from November 3-4, 2022, attend the 2nd edition of the annual Conference on Cooperatives and the Solidarity Economy [CCSE] hosted by Africa Cooperatives Institute of South Africa [ACI-SA].

The conference & workshop will take place at the University of Johannesburg, School of Tourism and Hospitality [STH], with tea, lunches, and the gala dinner being served in the same venue.

According to ACI-SA, the annual conference aims to contribute to the body of knowledge on cooperatives and the solidarity economy as it brings together academics and practitioners for the development of a robust knowledge base on the cooperative sector on the continent.

The conference which will be virtual and in-person “will create a platform for dialogue among academics, practitioners and policymakers for the co-creation of fit-for-purpose knowledge that will advance the cooperative agenda.”

ACI-SA says a pre-conference workshop will be held a day before the start of the conference with emerging young researchers to deepen their research skills in studying cooperatives.

Throughout the two-day conference, cooperatives will have stands at the conference venues to display their products and services, exchange ideas with conference delegates and sell their products/services to interested conference delegates.

The second edition of the conference will cover topics like: Cooperatives in Africa; Member Education in Cooperatives; Community Development through Cooperatives; Policy Support for Cooperatives; Critical perspectives on Cooperative Leadership; The cooperative Identity; and Financing start-up Cooperatives.

Other themes lined up for discussion are: Youth and Cooperatives; Cooperatives and the 4th Industrial Revolution; Data on Cooperative Development; New Cooperatives models: Network, Platform, Community, Social, Food, and Housing; Replicating Successful Cooperative Models; and Cooperatives, Climate Change, Resilience and Inclusion.

However, conference organisers will require delegates to show proof of vaccination against covid-19. “The conference venue operates a strict Covid-19 vaccination policy. All in-person attendees are required to produce proof of vaccination during registration or be prepared to produce daily Covid-19 test results on the dates the conference takes place.”

The inaugural conference hosted also in South Africa from November 4-5, 2021, brought together researchers to present their research on cooperatives and the solidarity economy over a period of two days. Sixteen papers were presented in two parallel sessions over the two-day event.

The Keynote opening address on the first day of the 2021 conference was delivered by Leonard Okello, Chief Executive Officer, Uhuru Institute [TUI]. Professor Esther Gicheru, Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the Cooperatives University of Kenya delivered the Keynote Opening Address on the second day of the conference.

Other panelists at the past conference included: Sebonkile Thaba from the University of Johannesburg, Thapelo Obateng, ICA Africa Board Member of the International Cooperative Alliance Africa, Southern Africa Region and Orapeleng Nareetsile Secretary-General, Botswana Youth Co-operative Alliance.
