Six PDM training centres opened in Nebbi Municipality empower beneficiaries

The centres, located in Abindu, Thatha and Central divisions, will serve as hubs for training PDM beneficiaries in various enterprises, including coffee growing, dairy farming, piggery, poultry keeping, crop cultivation and fish farming, among others

NEBBI, April 25, 2026 — In a bid to enhance agricultural sustainability and strengthen the capacity of the Parish Development Model [PDM] beneficiaries, six demonstration centres have been established across the three divisions of Nebbi Municipality.

The centres, located in Abindu, Thatha and Central divisions, will serve as hubs for training PDM beneficiaries in various enterprises, including coffee growing, dairy farming, piggery, poultry keeping, crop cultivation and fish farming, among others.

According to local leaders, Abindu and Hill wards will host cassava demonstration centres, while Nyacara Ward will focus on piggery. Thatha Ward has been designated for rice production training, and Forest Ward will host a poultry demonstration centre.

While monitoring the facilities days ago, leaders urged the PDM beneficiaries to select viable, results-oriented enterprises to accelerate socio-economic transformation.

Vivien Chota, the Deputy Town Clerk of Nebbi Municipality, encouraged farmers and PDM SACCO groups to maintain proper records, noting that this is essential for monitoring profitability, tracking livestock, managing feed costs and ensuring regulatory compliance.

She also cautioned beneficiaries, particularly men, against misusing PDM funds, urging them not to divert the soft loans towards marrying multiple wives but instead invest in improving household incomes, which is crucial in enhancing the welfare of their families.

“PDM is a game changer and is being viewed as a decisive government intervention aimed at eradicating poverty and improving livelihoods among vulnerable Ugandans,” Chota said.

The Mayor of Nebbi Municipality, Geoffrey Ngiriker, similarly advised beneficiaries not to divert funds but to invest them as intended if they are to effectively combat household poverty.

In Unjuku Lower Cell, Forest Ward in Thatha Division, Collins Onyuthuwun, a poultry farmer, shared his success story. He said he started with 50 birds and has since grown his flock to 300. His farm is now being used as a learning centre for other aspiring poultry farmers.

Onyuthuwun explained that he remained committed to poultry farming due to his long-standing passion for the enterprise.

“When I received the PDM funds, I did not switch to another enterprise because I have always been passionate about poultry keeping. I stayed committed and worked hard to grow my project,” he said.

He added that while working in groups can be beneficial, some members may discourage others, stressing the importance of individual commitment and hard work in achieving success.

Andrew Yangchon, the Agriculture Officer for Nebbi Municipality, urged owners of the demonstration centres to properly manage their enterprises so that other farmers can effectively learn from them.

The PDM is a government financial inclusion initiative launched in February 2022, aimed at transitioning 3.5 million households in Uganda from subsistence farming to participation in the money economy. Under the programme, each beneficiary receives a soft loan of Shs 1 million to invest in an enterprise of their choice.
