Security operatives recover two guns in Mbale
MBALE – Security in Mbale district has recovered two AK47 guns that were stolen by thugs who raided Bungokho Police Station on November 24, 2022.
The guns were during a joint security operation prompted by a tip-off by a resident of Nabumali town council in Mbale district. It led to the arrest of four prime suspects linked to the attack on the police station.
The Elgon regional police spokesperson, Rogers Taitika said the suspects were able to lead the police detectives to a river bank where the guns were recovered.
During interrogation, the suspects claimed they were involved in several robberies and killed one person in Bungokho Sub-county.
Taitika said the suspected criminals also stole a radio call from the police station. However, the radio call is still missing.
“We mounted the operation which has been ongoing and fortunately we have been able to recover two rifles. We have worked with civilians and various security agencies to recover the guns,” Taitika said.
He said the civilian called the police after realising the suspects were trying to carry out an aggravated robbery in Nabumali trading centre. “The civilian was vigilant and called police who immediately intervened and arrested the suspects and recovered the guns,” he said.
He said the suspects who are between 15-25 years will be arraigned before court when the investigations are complete and charged with aggravated robbery and murder.
“Our findings indicate that they [suspects] have been engaging in different criminal activities using the same stolen guns. They have staged many robberies. We had one in Busiu town council, Nabumali town council, and Bungohko Sub-county where they stormed a home of David Masaba and killed him,” Taitika said.
The Mbale resident district commissioner, Yasmin Nasike, said the recovery of guns brings hope to the people of Mbale and the neighbouring areas.
“Another gun was recovered at Nambale River. This was the remaining gun among those stolen at Bungokho Police Post. Thanks to the UPDF and police, and the community. This gun was used in the murder of a young man called David Masaba in Bungokho Sub-county. We now know the enemies. They are in police custody,” Nasike said.
She commended the community of Nabumali town council and Mbale police for the vigilance exhibited.
“Our people must remain vigilant and report all the suspicious cases to the authorities,” she said.
On December 21, 2022, David Masaba, a boda boda rider, was shot dead in front of his children in Nashikhaso village in Bungokho Sub-county.
