Politics: Late Cecilia Ogwal`s daughter pledges to boost VSLAs

LIRA, February 13, 2024 – Dr. Rosemary Alwoc Ogwal, a daughter to the former Dokolo District Woman Member of Parliament, Cecilia Atim Ogwal has pledged to continue supporting Village Savings and Loans Associations [ VSLAs ] initiated by her late mother who died on January 18, 2024.

Handing over 120 mattresses and cash prizes to the 2023 Primary Leaving Examination [PLE] stars last Friday, Dr Alwoc said VLSAs are the drivers to rescue the locals from household poverty.

“Though my mother is no more, I will take up the mantle and continue supporting VLSAs, offering bursaries to children, supporting elderly persons and widows,” Dr Alwoc who expressed interest in vying for the 2026 parliamentary seat to replace her mother, said.

Dr. Alwoc gifted two best PLE stars from each of the 10 districts of Lango Sub-region, thus Alebtong, Apac, Amolatar, Dokolo, Kole, Lira, Otuke, Oyam, and Apac Municipality, and Lira City. Each of the recipients got a mattress, and Shs 100,000 to facilitate them as they join secondary education.

She called upon parents in Dokolo district to educate both girls and boys so that no child is left behind in education.

“We want Dokolo to develop and catch up with other districts and it cannot happen when we ignore education because it is a foundation of human capital development,” she said.

On his part, The Dokolo district LC5 Chairperson, James Otto Apili said the district was in need of more teachers, calling upon government to help.

For his part, the District Inspector of Schools, David Livingstone Okello, castigated parents for ignoring the government`s school feeding programme, saying pupils need to eat while at school so that they concentrate.

He added that the high rate of PLE failures in the district was alarming, saying there is a need for all the stakeholders to join hands to address the problem.
