Oyam: 16 die in bus accident
OYAM-16 people have been confirmed dead following a fatal accident involving a Kitgum bound bus at Kamdini, Oyam district.
The 16 and several other passengers were traveling in a bus, registration number UAT 259P belonging to Roblyn Bus Company.
Police reports indicate that the bus which was traveling from Kampala to Gulu rammed into a stationary trailer at around midnight along Kampala-Gulu highway.
The trailer was allegedly loading at Adebe trading center just one kilometer to corner Kamdini checkpoint.
Jimmy Patrick Okema, the North Kyoga Police Spokesperson confirmed the incident saying upon receiving the information, traffic and general duty police officers visited the scene where 12 people were confirmed to have died on the spot while four others died from Atapara Hospital after being rushed there to get treatment.
Okema said that the bodies of the deceased have been conveyed to Anyeke Health IV pending postmortems.
According to Okema, the stationary trailer did not have any sign that it had parked.
“The cause of the accident is yet to be established but preliminary findings indicate wrong parking by the trailer driver who did not display no warning signs as required by traffic laws,” Okema said.
Okema has now called for calmness from the public as investigations continue.
This week, 16 South Sudanese traders sustained serious injuries in Amuru district after the vehicle they were traveling in got involved in a road accident.
