Link trained youths to Emyooga and PDM, Lira City boss urges govt

LIRA-Lira City mayor, Sam Atul has advised government to help the youths trained in vocational skills join Emyooga and Parish Development Model [ PDM ] programmes and support them with the tools necessary so that they embark on income-generating activities as soon as possible.

Both Emyooga and PDM are presidential initiatives aimed at fighting poverty and creating wealth within some sections of the population through various income-generating activities.

At least 218 youths between were passed out recently at Lango Zonal Presidential Industrial Hub located at Lira University. The pass-out was officiated by the State House comptroller, Jane Barekye.

The trainees were awarded Level One Certificate of Uganda Vocational Qualifications in carpentry and joinery, tailoring and cutting garments, hairdressing, and welding, and metal fabrication.

Atul said since each district in the country is producing 30 youths per circle [six months], they should be registered under Emyooga SACCO groups and engage in saving to improve their earnings.

“We should link these youths to Emyooga and PDM SACCOs and support them with resources and see how they are performing,” Atul said.

“We are also aware that government is rolling out Parish Development Model [PDM] and I was informed youth groups are not performing well in certain activities,” he added.

He also suggested that government should reduce the number of months spent on training in order to have more young people trained.

There are 21 zonal Presidential industrial hubs in the country constructed in all sub-regions by State House with the aim of skilling 12, 600 youths every year under the Presidential Initiative on Skilling.
