ALEBTONG, March 18, 2024 – A total of 241 youth in Alebtong district have been trained in information and communication technology [ ICT ] by Huawei Technologies, a Chinese company operating in Uganda.
Those trained in ICT include entrepreneurs, vulnerable people, businesswomen, and students among others were passed out last week on Thursday in a ceremony held at Alebtong Booma ground. It was presided over by the Government Chief Whip, Denis Hamson Obua.
The Deputy Managing Director Huawei Technologies, Jian Gao said the project targets to train over 10,000 Ugandans within three years and so far it has trained 3,000.
He said they have so far covered Teso, Busoga and Lango sub-regions. Gao said the project is progressing well and has so far trained over 3,000 people who are ready to begin projects of their own.
“We hope that those who benefitted from these skills can use it to improve their livelihood and understand the importance of ICT,” he said.
Obua, who graced the ceremony noted that there is cordial working relationship between China and Uganda and that the relationship will continue without any disruption.
“I want to salute you for taking the lead to come to this rural district called Alebtong to train people in ICT,” Obua added.
He said Huawei’s training of young people is a clear manifestation that ICT forms a very important aspect of life in the current world.
He urged the Chinese company to consider establishing an ICT hub in Alebtong district.
On his part, Denis Ogada, a beneficiary of the training said he is ready to put to use the skills acquired to create his own employment.
He was also hopeful to get short term job with the Uganda National Bureau of statistics [UBOS] and National Identification Registration Authority [NIRA] who are in need of workers for the upcoming national population census and national ID registration exercises, respectively.
Barbra Akello, another beneficiary from Adwir Sub-county, said before she was recruited for training in ICT, she knew nothing about the subject. However, she is happy she can now use the skills acquired to start an online business.
