Over 200 youth to be passed out at Lango Presidential Industrial Hub

LIRA – A total of 220 youths undergoing skills development training and agricultural value addition at Lango Presidential industrial Hub hosted at Lira University are due to be passed out in December 2022.

The youth were admitted in July for a six months skills development training on tailoring, carpentry, bakery, knitting, shoe making, hairdressing, welding, coffee processing, stone cutting, and maize processing.

The hub admitted disadvantaged youths between the ages of 18-32 under the presidential initiative to skill Ugandan youth into the money economy.

The planned number of learners per skill was 60 for carpentry, 60 shoe making, 60 tailoring, and 40 for value-addition.

Vicky Abura, the assistant manager said the training is progressing well at the industrial hub, with those admitted for carpentry and tailoring having started making their own products for sale.

She said they expect to award course certificates to the successful trainees.

In 2020, President Yoweri Museveni implored government to allocate Shs 130 billion for the construction of 21 zonal industrial hubs across the country to enhance youth skilling and training.

The establishment of the hubs in all the sub-regions was completed early this year and is scheduled to skill and train 12,600 youths.

“The Government is not leaving any stone unturned because we need all the unprivileged youths to attain skills and they become useful,’’ she said.

Lango sub-region comprises districts of Lira, Otuke, Alebtong, Kwania, Dokolo, Amolatar, Apac, Oyam, Kole, and Lira City.

Abura said they plan to recruit a new group scheduled to undergo skills training in January next year.

The 22 zonal industrial hubs seek to scale down unemployment rates, especially among the youth and stimulate industrial production in the country. The project will also reinforce the rollout of the Parish Development Model [PDM] initiative.
