Nigeria Police Cooperative Society accused of fraud

LAGOS -Some police personnel late last year accused the leadership of the Nigeria Police Cooperative Multipurpose Society Limited of fraud, according to Sahara Reporters.

Records show Nigeria Police cooperative, which is under the Nigeria Police Force was established in 1977 with the aim of helping to improve the welfare of contributors.

It was established by Force Order No. 130, to cater for the welfare needs of Nigerian personnel and their families.

Some policemen who spoke to Sahara Reporters then claimed they have not been able to access their voluntary contributions to the cooperative society for over 6 months.

“Nigeria Police Co-operatives have turned to another thing now, unlike before. If you applied for your voluntary savings, within 24 hours, you would cash your money but now, only God knows what the problem is,” an officer said.

“So, some of us applied last year while some applied this year. Sometime in July this year, we were told by police cooperative authorities that they were having a system error, so they returned everybody’s money to their account and said we should reapply, which we did. But till today, nothing has been done. What we’re able to gather is that the police authorities are using our cooperative money to build a house in Ikeja, Lagos.

“In my opinion, I will suggest it is time for whoever is in charge of the Nigeria police cooperative to address the contributors regarding the development. I’ve been serving with a cooperative since 1991, and I have not seen something like this.

“There was a time that one would apply for money in the morning and before noon, your money was ready. They will issue you a cheque or pay you cash, but now things have changed overnight due to fraud.

“To get your money can take two months, three months, four months, five months, six months, some even claimed that it takes up to a year now, they have not gotten their money. I think whoever is in charge should address the contributors through a signal or through police information.

“It is very shameful and disgraceful when I see junior officers insulting top-ranking officers out of frustration.”

“Last year I applied for my money, up till now, I keep hearing ‘exercise patience’. The AIG for the cooperative society has not given the order to pay the money, my question now is what is really happening with my money?” Another police officer asked.

Multiple calls put across to Bello Makwashi, the Assistant Inspector General of Police/Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Police Multi-Purpose Cooperative Society Limited were not connected.
